Hi,
So in Kenya, the word muzungu means 'foreigner'. I have been one of four muzungu's in a small rural town in Meru county in Kenya for over three weeks.
I am not one to enjoy being stared at, I am quite a quiet introspective person by nature. I search out the darkest corner to dance in, usually helped along by beer, cider or a nice grown up G and T. I little darkness where I know I can let myself go knowing I wont embarrass myself or others with the awkwardness.
Not so here, here you sing and dance in public, shake hands and get involved in life. I'v been shouted at walking down the street, usually in warm greeting. Had stare's and generally become a source of fascination for the young and a point of interest for the elders due to my muzungu-ness.
But I have let myself go more here. I have though off the instinct to hide in a corner and have relaxed in the center of a circle of kids dancing away- teenage girls on one side, elderly lady on the other. It took some time and gentle encouragement from my fellow volunteers and the kindness of strangers but I danced.
Here I am, loving this little town in this beautiful country, in this vibrant and hugely friendly community. I enjoy shaking peoples hands whilst exchanging a "Muga" greeting in Kimaru. Chatting with the kind and friendly man in the local supermarket, even exchanging email addresses to keep in contact.
I love seeing little children's total joy at my appearance, hearing their little squeaky voices shout "MUZUNGU!" whilst skipping along beside me. The wide and gorgeous grins of the hardworking women of this community, as they see you try to stumble through a greeting in one of the local languages, or in my case physically stumble walking down the road, or grassy path. This is a colorful and welcoming place.
To be a visitor is a very lovely thing, its a fantastic experience and I wouldn't change it for the world. I will miss the town of Mathara Meru.
My thoughts late at night three days before leaving town.
